A Mercury-like manual blood pressure monitor is a type of sphygmomanometer used to measure blood pressure manually. It is called "Mercury-like" because it is designed to resemble the traditional mercury-based sphygmomanometers that were commonly used in the past. However, instead of using mercury to measure pressure, this type of monitor typically uses an aneroid gauge, which is a mechanical device that converts pressure into a readable value on a dial.
To use a mercury-like manual blood pressure monitor, the healthcare professional or user will first inflate the cuff around the upper arm using a bulb or pump. Then, they will slowly release the air while listening to the pulse with a stethoscope placed on the arm, just below the cuff. As the pressure is released, the healthcare professional or user will observe the gauge and listen for the first beating sound (systolic pressure) and the disappearance of the sound (diastolic pressure), which indicate the blood pressure values.
