An endotracheal tube (ETT) is a flexible tube made of plastic or rubber that is inserted into a person's trachea (windpipe) through the mouth or nose to establish an open airway. It is used in medical procedures or emergency situations where mechanical ventilation is required, such as during surgery, to assist with breathing or to deliver oxygen and other gases to the lungs. The tube is connected to a ventilator or a bag-valve-mask device, allowing the healthcare provider to control and manage the person's breathing.

Endotracheal tubes have the following features:

Length and Diameter: Endotracheal tubes come in different lengths and diameters to accommodate patients of various sizes and anatomical variations.

Cuff: Most ETTs have an inflatable cuff located near the distal end of the tube. When inflated, the cuff creates a seal within the trachea, preventing air leakage. This helps in maintaining positive pressure during mechanical ventilation and also prevents aspiration of fluids into the lungs.

Pilot Balloon and Inflation Port: Connected to the cuff, a pilot balloon and inflation port allow for monitoring cuff inflation and providing additional air into the cuff when needed.

Radiopaque Line: To aid in visualizing the tube's position during placement and confirmation, some ETTs have a radiopaque line running along their length, which is visible on X-rays.

Connector or Adapter: At the proximal end, there is a connector or adapter that allows attachment to a ventilator, bag-valve-mask device, or other respiratory equipment.

Depth Markings: Depth markings are often present on the tube to help healthcare providers ensure the appropriate insertion depth within the trachea.
